Be Alert!

When I was 16, and began driving, my dad would say to me, "Be alert," as I left the house.
I don't really remember what I thought at the time, but now, I think it's a great 'command.'
Be alert - because other people drive like morons.
Be alert - because distractions are everywhere.
Be alert - because the unpredictable can happen.
Be alert - because people get killed driving all the time.
Be alert.

Not long after I got my license, a friend and I were in the car, slowing down as we approached a green light because there was a line of cars waiting to turn left.  I noticed in my rearview mirror, the car behind me was fast approaching, and not slowing down.  She was coming too fast.  I quickly checked the right side mirror as I swerved into the next lane to avoid her crashing into my rear.  She hit me anyway (although not straight on) and my car hit the car in the next lane.  It ended up that she went flying into the front left side mirror and it fell off.  That was the only damage done.  I remember thinking she was only a few feet from the part of the door near my head.  Alert prevented, well, who knows what.

Be alert.

Five times in Mark 13, Jesus commands his followers to "be on guard" or "stay awake."  We're going to focus on 3 of those times.

Beginning with Jesus speaking in verse 22:
"For false christs and false prophets will arise and perform signs and wonders to lead astray, if possible, the elect. But be on guard; I have told you all things beforehand. But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will be falling from heaven, and the powers in the heavens will be shaken. And then they will see the Son of Man coming in clouds with great power and glory. And then he will send out the angels and gather his elect from the four winds, from the ends of the earth to the ends of heaven.

From the fig tree learn its lesson: as soon as its branch becomes tender and puts out its leaves, you know that summer is near. So also, when you see these things taking place, you know that he is near, at the very gates. Truly, I say to you, this generation will not pass away until all these things take place. Heaven and earth will pass away, but my words will not pass away.

But concerning that day or that hour, no one knows, not even the angels in heaven, nor the Son, but only the Father. Be on guard, keep awake. For you do not know when the time will come. It is like a man going on a journey, when he leaves home and puts his servants in charge, each with his work, and commands the doorkeeper to stay awake. Therefore stay awake—for you do not know when the master of the house will come, in the evening, or at midnight, or when the rooster crows, or in the morning— lest he come suddenly and find you asleep. And what I say to you I say to all: Stay awake.”

As I read this, I wondered why the warning? when else would a warning like this be given?  Of course, I thought of my dad calling out, "Be alert!" as I left the house.  But the other situation that came to mind is war. Be on guard. Man your post. Don't fall asleep at night.  Sleep with your boots on, ready for action. Because the enemy isn't going to ring the doorbell and ask if you're ready to fight.

Although we find the phrases 4 times in this short section, it is given with only 3 different reasons.

#1 - Be on guard because I have told you all things beforehand; don't be led astray.
#2 - Be on guard and stay awake for you don't know when the time will come.
#3 - Stay awake lest he return and find you asleep!

Let's examine & meditate upon each of those carefully... tomorrow.  [Can you handle the suspense? ;)]

Gender Roles in the Church

I read an interesting article yesterday that was [kind of] about the debate amongst Christians on the roles of women in the church.

My biggest take away is summed up in these quotes below:

"All of this is obvious, of course, but it may help to remind us that as important as the gender issue is for Evangelicals, especially when it affects one's understanding of marriage or of the Trinity, we are not as divided as the world would like to believe.

...is rather that both groups rightly have a profound loyalty to Jesus Christ and hence to His Word. They believe what they do about women because they believe that their viewpoint is demanded by Scripture. This is why if anyone can demonstrate that an alternative interpretation is actually more faithful to Scripture, most Christians will readily conform their opinion to that more faithful interpretation.

In any case, although the Enemy can always pervert and exaggerate differences among Christians in order to produce painful division, the fact that we hold our different views on gender roles with a degree of passion ironically can actually bind us to each other more closely. This is so because when viewed with charity we can detect in each other a much deeper kindred spirit: the passion with which we hold our disparate views is in reality the passion of our common loyalty to the Word of God."

It's a bit long, but was a worthwhile read for me.  For the full article, click here.

Import

Though I keep a private journal, this blog is a journal for me in some ways too.  It chronicles our lives.  The ins and out. The boring and the exciting.  The day to day.

So, I decided to import all my posts from my previous blog ('the cooks') today.  Everything from the past 3 years in one spot.  If you're looking for approximately 10 hours to kill... enjoy!

Otherwise, these are some that I pulled out just for old times' sake. :)

Content

LPS (the district I taught in last year) started work yesterday.
Wanna know something?
I'm so glad I'm not at work.
It's funny... I thought I'd feel a small amount of regret.  That I'd wonder if I was making the right move. That'd I mourn the loss of my 'working mom' status.  And I don't.  Not even an ounce of wonder.

Don't get me wrong. I liked teaching music. I loved the kids & will definitely miss my work friends.  But, as I read all the teacher blogs about people heading back, setting up classrooms, coming up with new ideas, I honestly feel grateful to be where I am.

I am content to be home full-time with Addie.  And not just content in the 'i can live with this' sense... excited!
To have more time to energetically pursue other interests - blogging, photography, reading, learning.
To have more time to spend with family - I'm in Florida on vacation right now.
To be moving across the country to Cambridge.

Do I think I'll ever teach public school music again?  I don't know.
Do I think I'll ever teach in an informal setting?  Daily.  (Parent = teacher, for better or worse.)
Do I think I'll ever teach in a formal setting again? I sure hope so!

But for now, I'm content with where God has me.
Disciple. Wife. Mother. Learner. Dreamer. Writer. Reader. Friend. Maybe more.

Small Miracles

So, in case you haven't heard, we are headed to Florida with family for a week of fun in the sun.  We are driving.  With 2 babies.  At first, honestly, I was dreading it.  Slightly.  I mean, the girls are 7 and 13 months, so they now officially prefer not to be in car seats for 18 hours.  But, as I chose to come around to the idea, I dreaded it less and less.  I prayed over the trip gradually and the Lord just told me it'd be fine.

I asked 2 specific people to pray for our trip.  They each told me they had.

And then I prayed again this morning - day 1. 6.5 hours from Omaha to St. Louis was the goal.  Very manageable, regardless of how it went.  But, oh so much more enjoyable without crying babies.

This morning's prayer: "Lord... Let the girls sleep soundly, that our car may be peaceful and calm and safe.  I pray we'd enjoy each other's company & that the babies would be happy.  That it'd be a miraculous testament to how you care about the small things in life.  About how you provide for us always - day in and day out.  Your mercies are new every morning Lord.  Thank you for your great faithfulness."

This is what happened.
Babies up at 6:45.
Nurse/ breakfast.
Pull out of driveway at 7:15
The girls are happy.  Both girls nap. There is no crying.
We stop for McDonald's Breakfast at 10:30.
There is 15 minutes of crying over the course of the next 3 hour drive.
We stop at 2 to get gas & go to the bathroom & change diapers.
Addie falls back asleep after crying hard for 5 minutes. The girl was TIRED!
Lanie falls asleep after giggling and playing peekaboo with her uncles.
Arrive at hotel at 3.

All I can say is - no more than 20-30 minutes max of crying from 2 babies in 8 hours of driving. Um.
miracle.
It's small in the grand scheme of life, but BIG in my day today.

I'm grateful to know a God who listens, answers, loves, cares. About the small things too.

2 happy babies at McDonald's (in the grossest high chairs you've ever seen).

And we're off..

...like a herd of turtles.

My family always said that when it took us a long time to get in the car.  Which was sometimes often.

It was true this morning when we loaded up to drive from Omaha, Nebraska to Destin, Florida.  A herd of turtles.

Some stats for you (in honor of my statistics-loving husband):

6 adults
2 middle schoolers
2 babies
2 cars
1 roof top luggage rack
6 suit cases
4 duffle bags
2 coolers
25 squeezeable portable baby food containers
1,000,000 cheerios
19 toys (1 for each hour of the drive)
1,200 miles (one way)
6 books (because I don't have a kindle)
3 camera lenses
2 infant sound machines
2 pack-n-plays
2 car seats
6 hotel rooms reserved

and oh so much more.

:)

DeBrie Family

My favorite sister-in-law recently asked me to take some pictures of her sweet family of 3.  I agreed on the condition that she would trade and take pictures of our family!  Our husbands were thrilled with this agreement. [Not.]

We went to Lake Zorinsky as soon as we could get out the door after Lanie woke up at 7:30 am.  As far as photo shoots go, happy baby > perfect lighting in our opinions.  But, a couple hours after the sun comes up is actually a great time. So win-win.

As far as how they turned out - I learned a lot even just from taking Matthew and Jessica's engagement pictures a few days prior.  Plus, I tried to read/ practice a bit in between the two photo shoots so I could hopefully improve a little!  What a learning curve there is in photography!  But it's definitely a learn-by-doing scenario so I think there was some progress even just between the two sessions.  [happy sigh - how fun.]

Side note - a family friend of my inlaws came and took family pictures Monday night.  Monday night.  Remember what I said earlier about happy babies?  Let's just say 6 pm is a risky time at this house for babies. She brought Sophie the giraffe & HOLY COW!!!! That squeaky giraffe is a miracle worker for baby pictures.  Mind Blown.

Back to Alex & Elsie.  It was hard for me to pick less than 50 to show you because they were so happy and natural to photograph, not to mention they were with the cutest 1 year old on the planet.

So, here it goes!!

Lanie loves to be thrown.

Got a hold on mom's hair while talking to dad :)

I'm not sure why, but I think this one is just so sweet.

Exploring

This one cracks me up every time!! It's the same face she makes mid-shiver :)

My genius niece loves to find belly buttons.

Especially her dad's because it makes him laugh!

This is one of my top 5 favorites from the whole morning.

This also makes top 5.

Look at those sweet eyes & tiny teeth.  She is so precious.

 Love all 3 of them.
