I started a new Bible Study with a ministry called "Thru the Bible."
The teaching is by J. Vernon McGee.
He is dead but they just keep playing his teaching on repeat.
Genesis 1 to Revelation 22.
Verse by verse by verse by verse.
It takes 5 years. 20-30 minutes per day.
You can listen to the daily podcast and jump in where they are or go back and find Genesis 1 and start there.
That's what I did.
In the beginning, God created...
Ben is doing it too. He started it first. I'm copying him. I'm going to try to catch up so we can talk about it together.
3 days down, 4 years and 362 days to go :)
Do you wanna listen? (Genesis 1 starts in April 2011)
p.s. it's free to stream or download. and you can even get his notes & outlines. what a great resource!

waffle crisps instead of grahams on s'mores? yes please.
terrible quality but i LOVE this picture.
This was the worse aisle I've ever seen. ALL those character fabrics? ugh. I am going to shield Addie from the character world as long as possible. And, why are the characters marketed to girls WAY more obnoxious than boy characters? Hello Kitty... Ew. Buzz lightyear... so cool!

small changes
I made a couple small changes.
Did you notice??
I'll give you a clue.
One involves these.
yea, I paid $1.99 for all that. My time to figure out how to make those in some lame downloadable image creator that is supposed to substitute for photoshop is worth more than that :)
can you spot the other ones?

A week in Boston
So we moved to Boston a week ago. Well, Cambridge to be specific. I haven't figured out whether people here are particular about that. Like, in Chicago if you say "I'm from Chicago," but you're actually from the burbs, some city folk get a bit crabby. I think it's all "boston" here. But, I'll have to get back to you for sure.
The T (subway) is great. Fast. Always a train coming. It's awesome.
People are wayyyyyy nicer than I'd heard. Especially when I have Adelyn with me.
There is a swing set outside our front door.
There is a huge splash park/ wading pool at the Boston Common (a famous park closer to downtown).
We have met a LOT of families in our complex. Maybe 15. One is American.
It's beautiful here.
The roads are ridiculous. Seriously, google map Cambridge & then zoom in. There is absolutely no logic. You'd think the founding fathers and a bunch of Harvard/ MIT/ BU folks could come up with better street planning.
I was surprised by the number of SAHMs I've met. Woohoo!
The preschool across the street is $30,000/ year. & it has a waiting list.
We are having a rental AC window unit installed tomorrow. Hallelujah. It was a nice idea to think we could get by without it in August.
Speaking of AC, we have to have a special 'energy star certified' unit put in because everybody here loves being green. Especially Harvard. I saw a sign that said "green is the new crimson."
I've seen a lot ofweirdos interesting people walking down the street. I missed that.
Our list of restaurants to try grows exponentially every day. So.many.restaurants.
We had great sea food on the sea. It was lovely.
We got bikes. As one of my good friends said, "Oh, that's environmentally friendly of you." Haha!! Try budget friendly. Bikes < Car.
We walk at least 5 miles a day. (The bikes aren't ready yet.)
It's good exercise living on the 3rd floor. Also, it's good business for Amazon & Diapers.com. I plan to order as much as possible.
That's all the randomness I can handle right now.
Goodnight.
Or should I say, good-naht.

Teaching Nostalgia
**I've had this post drafted for a while and forgot to post it!! Happy back-to-school everyone :)
As many teachers head back to school, I find myself nostalgic for my public school teaching career. I recently wrote how happy I am to be home with Addie. And I am. But, I do look back on the past few years in public schools and I feel so happy. Happy to have experienced what I did; to have learned from colleagues and students; to have laughed so much; and to have hopefully made a positive difference for some children. I wish I would have been better at writing things down... I think I'll write down what I can remember over the next few weeks.
But here are some highlights:
a funny memory

on becoming hippie-ish
Me: "I could see us becoming kinda hippie-ish in Boston."
Elsie (my sister-in-law): "What do you mean?"
Me: "Oh, you know, like using reusable grocery bags to avoid the looks of death from small corner market store owners... growing herbs in our window, walking places, buying our produce at a farmers market or local produce store, stuff like that."
Elsie: "Well, you guys are kinda prone to being a bit hippie-ish anyway, right?"
Ben: "I was a hippie for a few months."
hahaha. I don't really think of us as hippie-ish, but i suppose we have done a few stereo-typical hippie things.
We used a midwife.
I used a chemical free balm on Addie's skin for a while.
I like to drag Ben with me to a good farmer's market.
I've considered cloth diapering. (Purely for the cost. This has nothing to do with my concern for the planet, although I think that's a nice bonus.)
We like public transportation. I don't think this is hippie-ish though. Just normal if you live in a city.
Oh, and Ben has a huge tattoo that says "One Love." A shout out to Bob Marley... from the few months Ben was a hippie. So, there's that.
But, at the end of the day, we are definitely not hippies.
